Gate Lodge - Sustainable Materials Timber Framed Extension to Gate Lodge: This was a sustainability designed extension using natural materials and incorporating passive solar design in the building layout. I used a large overhanging eaves to protect the lime rendered super insulated strawbale wall. I used concrete pad foundations to support the raised timber floor of the extension which help in minimising the impact of the building on the ground. I researched different methods of construction for this extension so as to broaden my knowledge of sustainable materials. I visited a real live project at the design stage of this building so as to help me decide on what would be the best selection of materials. I decided that strawbale infill would be the best method because if there is a build-up of moisture in the wall the strawbale can be removed and reinsulated with a different natural insulation and clad with timber cladding.
